The Client

Transylvania University - affectionately known as Transy - was founded in 1780 and is America’s 16th oldest university. It's gained recognition in pop culture as the setting of the elaborate book heist depicted in American Animals, a 2018 film based on actual events that took place on campus. It’s location in downtown Lexington, KY makes it unique among liberal arts schools which are typically located in small towns.

The Project

A new administration was ushering in a fresh and aspirational vision for Transylvania University. Working with the nation's leading higher education marketing agency, our creative director—then lead designer for the university—created a contemporary visual identity that resonated not only with current and prospective students, but long-time college friends, staff, and alumni.

Touchpoints & Collateral

The new logo, color pallet, and typography were deployed across a range of applications. A stationery suite comprised of business cards, note cards, letterhead, email signatures, folders and presentation templates laid the foundation. The visual language was then extended to banners, environmental signage, wayfinding, apparel, and merchandise, creating a branded campus experience.

Admissions & Alumni

The new visual identity system was carried through every office, but targeted to individual audiences. Admissions viewbooks, brochures, invitations, and admitted student packets were brought to life with vibrant typography and captivating images that personalized Transy’s message for a younger audience. The Alumni magazine was also reimagined as a campus news and thought leadership publication with a contemporary design befitting its sophisticated readership.
